Music for a New Crossing was commissioned jointly from Andy Sheppard and Kathryn Tickell by music north, the presenting and producing arm of Music Centre Gateshead. Andy and Kathryn gave the first performance themselves, live on Gateshead Millennium Bridge, on 14 September 2001 as part of a weekend of musical activity running up to the public opening of the Bridge on 17 September 2001.
