Sandy’s reading of this Buddy Holly song is worth remembering. Like all songs from the LP Rock On, this track was recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire in January 1972 and produced by Trevor Lucas. The Bunch was an ad hoc collection of “Fairport family” members who gathered together to record this collection of rock’n’roll songs. Apparently the reason behind the recording was to test the newly-opened Manor Studios.

This track was also included in the Sandy Denny anthologies No More Sad Refrains (2000) and A Boxful of Treasures (2004).

Fairport later revived this song at the 1983 and 1984 Cropredy Festivals, with Cathy Le Surf taking the lead vocal. This was released on the cassette The Boot - 1983 Fairport Reunion.

Harvey Andrews recorded Learning the Game in 1972 too for a single. This was later included in his compilation CD The Margarita Collection.
