I Don’t Know Where I Stand

[Joni Mitchell]

Joni Mitchell recorded her own song for her May 1969 album Clouds.

Fairport Convention recorded Joni Mitchell’s song even earlier in 1968 for their debut LP Fairport Convention where it was sung by Judy Dyble.

On 28 May 1968 they played it in in BBC Studio 1, 201 Piccadilly, for John Peel’s Top Gear radio show with Sandy Denny singing lead and Ian Matthews singing harmony vocals. Fairport have retained their original arrangement although there is no overdubbed guitar in the instrumental break. This recording was produced by Bernie Andrews; it was broadcast on 2 June 1968 with a repeat on 30 June 1968. The track was released on the Heyday cassette and both its CD reissues, in 2004 on the Fledg’ling’s 5CD Sandy Denny anthology A Boxful of Treasures, and in 2007 on the 4CD set Live at the BBC.
