The Lady Is a Tramp

[words Lorenz Hart, music Richard Rodgers]

This song from the Broadway musical Babes in Arms (1937) is best known by Frank Sinatra’s recording from the 1940s. It was also recorded by Fairport Convention on 23 September 1969 and broadcast on September 27 in John Peel’s BBC “Top Gear” session. Richard Thompson sang, Dave Mattacks played the piano and Simon Nicol drummed. For a long time, it was available on the bootleg A Chronicle of Sorts only but it was finally released in 2002 on the Fairport unConventioNal 4CD set and in 2007 on the “de luxe” 2CD reissue of Liege and Lief. On the latter, it is followed by an instrumental medley including itself.
