By Then
[Eliza Carthy]
Eliza Carthy recorded her own song by then in 1996 for her first solo album, Heat Light & Sound. She commented in the record’s sleeve notes:
This song is about wanting what the other person doesn’t want. You know it will be a mess in the end but you don’t care.
Lyrics
I see my pain before it is near to me
I shut it out before it is a problem
I have my eyes I have my mind
But still I believe that all is fine and still within my reach
I met my pain a day out on the road
I took a look and saw it as a thing I’d know
I have my eyes I have my mind
But still I believe that it will pass and I won’t look behind
So see my pain as it takes hold my senses
Of all the sugared kisses these are sweetest
I have my eyes I have my mind
But still I believe the weals they leave will not begin to show
