The Kipper Family
Henry and Sid Kipper
[Dick Nudds and Chris Sugden]
The Kipper family of Trunch, Norfolk have retained a store of their own, idiosyncratic repertoire of English folk songs which remained undiscovered until the 1980s, when Henry Kipper (then in his later years) and his 40-something son Sid discovered somehow the folk club revival circuit, and started performing their songs in rather hesitant, unaccompanied fashion, complete with regional (Norfolk) background material. Some (most) of the songs seemed oddly familiar—such as Dido Fido, The Wild Mounting Thyme and Uncle Tom Cobbley Can’t Come. With the passage of time they seemed to have the uncanny ability to “remember” yet more songs. Eventually they remembered a complete opera (The Crab Wars). By the 1990s, old Henry Kipper had retired and Sid Kipper was carrying on alone… In reality the Kippers are/were Chris Sugden and Dick Nudds (Kipper being most likely an affectionate borrowing from Copper).

Note to Not Sixteen Till Sunday
This song obviously predates the many printed versions of a superficially similar song, Seventeen Come Sunday. Here, though, the reason for the inclusion of the girl’s age is quite clear—obviously earlier collectors and publishers found the idea of a song about under-age sex too much for their prissy sensibilities, and “improved” it almost out of all recognition. The refrain, too, is rescued from the nonsense of Victorian sensibility to something much more meaningful. A full analysis is not possible here, but it should be noted that rhubarb is traditionally an aphrodisiac—“that get you going,” says Henry—while the fiddle is a well known sexual referent, as in Jack Onion, who fiddled so badly that the girls all wept.
Notes
Just when you thought there were no great traditional singers to find in England, along comes the Kipper Family (Henry and his up and coming son Sid) singing songs from the rarely heard tradition of Trunch in Norfolk. Unaccompanied they sing unique versions of traditional songs - Not Sixteen Till Sunday, The Unlaid Maid, All on the Shore, The Village P.I.M.P., and of course, their masterpiece Dido Fido which is passing into the tradition—not surprising when you consider the beauty of the lyrics:
There was Dido, Fido, Bonzo and Rex,
Rover and Lassie and Spot,
There was Butch, there was Candy,
There was Patch and there was Sandy,
These were the dogs what I had got.
Sheer poetry! A satirical classic!

Note to Spencer the Wild Rover
The discovery that two pages of Billy Kipper’s old song book had become stuck together has raised more questions than it has answered. When did they get stuck together, and, more importantly, how? Is the entire Kipper repertoire the result of pages getting stuck together? Such questions are better left to experts in matters adhesive. The fact is, however, that anyone who regarded Sid and Henry as simple, innocent rustics must now think again. It is quite clear that they are also enthusiastic and methodical researchers into their local traditions. With loving care and old rabbit-skinning knife Sid prised the errant pages apart and discovered this little gem. The big question now is how such an unusual song found its way into the Trunch tradition in the first place. According to Henry there is a story that it was first sung in the middle of the last century by Ephraim Kipper, who suffered from what might now be described as schizophrenia. Other favourites of his, such as Pretty Nancy Usher’s Well and Cruising All Around My Hat are now, sadly, lost.
(from the record sleeve notes)
Notes
Those loveable bastions of the Norfolk singing tradition are back with another selection of singular Trunch variants of traditional English songs. Unlike their first a cappella album they are joined by the famed New Trunch Coronation Band which features such superb musicians as Tony Hall, melodeon (a brilliant musician who has been absent from record for too long), Pennie Harris, hammered dulcimer, Tim Laycock, concertina, and Ursula Pank, cello. Here we have our first chance to hear such classic songs as The Rusty Cold Farmer, The Losing of the Whale, The Southrepps May Song, Bald General Coote, The Wild Mounting Time, Joan Sugarbeet, the amazing Spencer The Wild Rover, and others.

Notes
There’s no one else quite like The Kipper Family (who said “thank goodness”) and their rendings, er renderings of traditional songs from around their home village of Trunch. As the liner notes so succinctly point out “For those who admire the old style of singing, Sid & Henry Kipper have become something of a cult. For those who don’t, of course, they haven’t.” On this collection they perform mostly Christmas songs and stories and are joined for the festivities by various friends and enemies including The Rev Derek Bream, Bridget Bream, Annie Kipper (Miss), The St Just-Near-Trunch Handbell Ringers and others. Besides the title song they perform other seasonal ditties like Thanks A Lot, God, Oh Little Town Of Gimingham, Ring Out Wild Jingle Bells, That Was Christmas Eve, The Ivy & The Holly, Christmas Collapso, and others. You have been warned! (FS)
