Put the Road in Order

[John Kirkpatrick]

John Kirkpatrick sang his own song Put the Road in Order in 2001 on Brass Monkey’s fourth album Going and Staying. The album’s sleeve notes commented:

In the early 1900s, the collector Gavin Greig found loads of people in Aberdeenshire still singing about a road which had been built a hundred years previously—The Buchan Turnpike. In translating the song from the broad Scots dialect into singable English John has done so much re-writing, including adding a chorus, thet the good people of Buchan would be spinning in their graves if they knew. You can find the original in Roy Palmer’s book Strike the Bell.
