Pastevecké “Helokanie” / Helo Malenka

The American singing group, The Pennywhistlers sang the mountain holler Pastevecké “Helokanie” in 1966 on their Bounty/Nonesuch album Folksongs of Eastern Europe.

Peter Bellamy, Alan Rose and Mike Hockenhull learned Helo Malenka from the singing of the Pennywhistlers. They sang it in 1985 on Sharon and the Students’s cassette The Better Land. This track was also included in 1999 on Peter Bellamy’s Free Reed anthology Wake the Vaulted Echoes.

American folk septet, Kaia sang Pastevecké “Helokanie” on their 2009 live album Get Down, Rise Up!. This video shows them at a Roots & Sass concert in May 2007:
