Time to Ring Some Changes
[Richard Thompson]
Ashley Hutchings was fortunate enough to have a demo tape of Richard Thompson songs written and recorded towards the end of 1972. This tape included Time to Ring Some Changes and Rainbow over the Hill. Both songs were recorded during the Rise Up Like the Sun recording sessions in Chipping Norton in July 1978 with Martin Carthy and Andy Fairweather-Low singing on the first recording and Linda Thompson on the second. Only Time to Ring Some Changes found its way on the original LP; Rainbow over the Hill was intended for a never released single and had to wait until the CD re-release in 1992.
The Albion Band performed Time to Ring Some Changes live on 11 April 1978 at a BBC radio session. It was published on the CD The BBC Sessions. Another radio session recorded at Stockport in 1982 was included in 2005 on the Ashley Hutchings anthology Burning Bright. A further live recording from 2000 or 2001 was published on An Evening With the Albion Band.
Richard Thompson himself played his song solo on 8 January 1982 at The Bottom Line. This was published on his live album Small Town Romance. Another recording, this time with a full band, was made for the BBC TV series Hard Cash.
