Sleeve Notes by Shirley Collins
The Anthems in Eden suite was conceived in 1968. It was intended to give a picture of England “before the Fall” - that is, up to the Great War, when the maypole, which had once been the centre of so many village greens, was replaced by the memorial stone.
The suite was recorded for Harvest in the following year, and it brought together for the first time folk-song and hitherto rarely heard early-music instruments. It was a considerable undertaking, and, looking back, it amazes me that we even managed to get it all completed - both the suite and a collection of separate songs for the reverse side - within the two part-days that were allocated. We owed much to the incredible vitality of the late David Munrow.
When it was decided recently to reissue this album, I asked Harvest if they would allow me to record a new side to accompany the suite. This they agreed to.
I intend this to be my last record, and for this reason, the new items I have recorded cover all the aspects of the music I love best.
