The Months Go Round
[Steve Ashley]
Steve Ashley sang his own song The Months Go Round unaccompanied on his 2017 album Another Day.
Lyrics
Steve Ashley sings The Months Go Round
The chilly winds of March
Blow fast around the collar
But however hard they blast
We know April’s on its way
When the tumbles from the showers
Knock the heads down on the flowers
And very soon those little bowers
Will go blooming into May
And the migrants bring
All their fine songs to sing
And on the wing
They follow every tune
And the busy little swallow
Finds some mud and straw to borrow
So the swallows of tomorrow
May go soaring after June
To the green from the brown
The months go round
And we see the change
All on the ground
The tender leaves are in full swoon
In the balmy days of June
Till the sun up in the sky
Turns its fire to July
When the parklands and the pools
Draw the children from their schools
And the racquet, bat and ball
Draw their squabbles and their cries
And the windbreak’s shade
With the pail and spade
Find an August beach
And a picnic in the glade
Till the thunder and the rain
Make the umpire stop the game
And the satchel and the pen
Bring September round again
And the sun burns down
As the months go round
And we see the change
All on the ground
The little cobwebs in their hedges
Find there’s dew upon their edges
And a slice along the edge
Will spring the conker
From its shell
And we gaze in disbelief
At the blaze in every leaf
As October turns them over
And tolls its passing bell
And the embers burn
As November turns
And remember’s learned
With its penny for the guy
And the cider apples blend
As their lives come to an end
For just around the bend
Old December’s standing by
And the leaves fall down
As the months go round
And we see the change
All on the ground
The Christmas beer
Rolls in the barrels
To bring cheer to all the carols
As through our revels
Then we travel
To another brand New Year
And very soon
We come to know
If there’s a January snow
And with our fires all aglow
We go and banish all our fears
And the streets turn cold
As the sleet winds roll
Freezing every part
Through to February’s heart
And there’s still work for the stoker
While the snowdrops and the crocus
Through the frozen ground they poke
To bring us all to March
From the white to the brown
The months go round
And we see the change
All on the ground
Then the chilly winds of March
Blow fast around the collar
And however hard they blast
We know April’s on its way
And our lives slow down
As the years go round
Till we take our place
All in the ground
