The Singing Sailor
These recordings have been issued several times on Topic, plus on other labels in France, Australia and the USA.
The first releases of the recordings were on the elusive 1954/5 LP The Singing Sailor and on the 1957 8" LP The Black Ball Line. All tracks from these two albums were released in 1957 on the two Australian Wattle albums Singing Sailors and Shanties & Fo’c’sle Songs, and in 1958 and again in 1962/3 on the two American Stinson albums Haul on the Bowlin’ and Off to Sea Once More. The two Wattle albums and the second Stinson album can be bought as downloads from Ewan MacColl’s Bandcamp page. Note that they seem to be rips from the vinyl albums, not digital transfers from the master tapes, and that there are no sleeve notes from the original albums included. Still they may be worth having in your iTunes collection.
A.L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl did not reveal the sources of their songs on these albums. There is an extensive discussion, mainly by Gibb Sahib, on Mudcat. It concludes that the main sources they used were Joanna C. Colcord: Songs of American Sailormen (1924/1938) and William Main Doerflinger: Shantymen and Shantyboys (1951). Note that the drawings on the Wattle album covers are from Colcord’s book.
Acknowledgements
The track list of The Singing Sailor was copied from the Complete Topic Records Discography by Mike Brocken, Alistair Banfield & Rod Stradling. Alistair Banfield supplied the pictures and track information for other records I didn’t have myself at the time. Thank you very much!

Review
This review by W.A. Chislett is from Gramophone, April 1955:
The Singing Sailor is the most interesting Topic record yet issued (TRL3), more for its content than its performance. A. L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl are the soloists; sometimes unaccompanied, sometimes with a concertina played by Alf Edwards, and sometimes with a chorus. Brian Daly (guitar) is also mentioned on the record label and sleeve but succeeds in remaining remarkably unobtrusive. Here are sixteen sea shanties and sailor songs and many of them will be quite unfamiliar to the vast majority of people. That the songs from this selection, which have been recorded before, have been better sung than is the case here is undeniable but as against this very few are otherwise available and those that are, are the least interesting. Technically this record is not, or at any rate my copy is not, very good. The surface is only mediocre and the tape editing could have been better.

Notes
Alistair Banfield commented on the source of these recordings:
I think we are fairly safe in asserting that the Wattle recordings and the Topic recordings and the Chant du Monde recordings and the Stinson recordings are all from the same source.
I believe that it happened when Topic were short of money and were finding ways of licensing material that they recorded themselves so that the session and tape costs were paid for. Kenneth Goldstein had backing from Riverside and Stinson and helped with the finances of the session for The Singing Sailor. Wattle paid for the Outback Ballads session but licensed the recordings to Topic which made little difference to Topic, they still had the music to release and Wattle then put the music out in Australia. All of these recordings though, were made in England.
