The Pigeon on the Gate at The Session

Steeleye Span—then with Martin Carthy—performed a set of the three reels The Wind That Shakes the Barley, The Pigeon on the Gate, and Jenny’s Chickens for the BBC radio programme “Peel’s Sunday Concert” on 15 September 1971. This programme was included as a bonus CD of the 2006 reissue of their album Ten Man Mop or Mr Reservoir Butler Rides Again.

Brass Monkey played a set of the tunes The Pigeon on the Gate and The Primrose Lass in 2001 on their fourth album Going and Staying. The album’s sleeve notes said:

When Brass Monkey was still the trio of Carthy / Kirkpatrick / Evans, we put this step-dance tune of Scan Tester’s together with an Irish reel that Martin had once sung a song to. Dusted off for the historic moment when, briefly, we had two trombonists in the room at the same time.
