Steeleye Span

Formed:
St. Albans, England, 1969 by Ashley Hutchings who teamed up with two duos Maddy Prior & Tim Hart plus Gay & Terry Woods. Under the direction of Sandy Roberton, they signed to RCA and released 1970 album Hark! The Village Wait. In 1972, they transferred to Chrysalis records and had first singles success with surprise 1973 Christmas hit Gaudete. It sparked off further commercial fortunes during the mid-70’s.
Style:
Electric folk band who, like Fairport Convention, crossed-over into pop charts. They retained traditional roots and instruments throughout, although they progressed into rock market.
Songwriters:
All members through the years contributed their own songs; i.e. Hutchings, Prior & Hart, the Woods, Carthy, Johnson, etc. They also covered traditional Olde England folk tunes, reels and jigs, plus more regular classics Rave On (Buddy Holly) / Gaudete (trad. Latin hymn) / To Know Him Is to Love Him (Teddy Bears) / Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (children’s song) / etc. Maddy covered Rag Doll (Four Seasons) / Who’s Sorry Now? (Connie Francis) / Swimming Song (Loudon Wainwright III) / Boys of Bedlam (Nic Jones, Dave Morgan) / Winter Wakeneth (M. Kiszco).
Trivia:
Their 1974 Top 20 album Now We Are Six was produced by Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), and featured David Bowie playing sax solo on track To Know Him Is to Love Him. Their following album Commoners Crown saw actor Peter Sellers play ukulele on New York Girls. All Around My Hat was produced by Wombles singer Mike Batt.
