Somewhere Along the Road
[Rick Kemp]
“This is one of Rick Kemp’s songs with its eerie landscape and haunting melody.”
Maddy Prior in the sleeve notes of Year.
Besides Deep in the Darkest Night, Somewhere Along the Road is Rick Kemp’s best known song. Maddy Prior sang it accompanied by Huw Warren playing keyboards in 1988 as a bonus track of the CD version of the Silly Sisters’ (i.e. Maddy Prior and June Tabor’s) second album, No More to the Dance. This recording was also included on the Steeleye Span / Maddy Prior anthology A Rare Collection 1972-1996, on the Topic sampler A Woman’s Voice, and on the English folk anthology And We’ll All Have Tea. A new recording of this song was included in 2015 on the album Catch Up—The Essential Steeleye Span.
Maddy Prior recorded Somewhere Along the Road for a second time in 1993 for her solo album Year.
And finally Rick Kemp sang Somewhere Along the Road himself on his 1996 solo album Escape. He was accompanied by Ian Kellet, who was programming and playing keyboards, and by John Kirkpatrick on accordion. He and his daughter Theresa Kemp also sang it in 2018 on his Fellside album Perfect Blue.
Cathie Ryan (of Cherish the Ladies) sang Somewhere Along the Road in 2001 as the title track of her CD Somewhere Along the Road with Kate Rusby singing harmony vocals.
Sangsters sang Somewhere Along the Road in 2000 on their Greentrax album Sharp and Sweet.
Hen Party sang Somewhere Along the Road in 2002 on their WildGoose album The Heart Gallery. Sarah Margan also sang it to her own piano accompaniment in a home recording that was included in 2014 on her posthumous retrospective Only Remembered.
Marsden Blant & Squire recorded Somewhere Along the Road in 2003 for their album Trio.
Lyrics
Rich Kemp sings Somewhere Along the Road
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me
Beyond these present storms that blow
Waiting patiently
No secrets held in an open heart
A spirit that soars over mountains
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me
Somehow a guiding light
Always shows the way
To those who lose their way by night
Searching for the day
A day away from happiness
Tomorrow will bring a new sunrise
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me
Sometime when winds are still
Unexpectedly
Perhaps beyond this silent hill
A voice will call to me
Raise your eyes to see my world
Raise your voice and sing out
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me
