Maddy Prior: Deep in the Darkest Night (Making Waves SURF 109)

[Rick Kemp]

Besides Somewhere Along the Road, this is Rick Kemp’s most famous and most often recorded song. Maddy Prior commented in album Year’s sleeve notes:

Rick Kemp wrote this beautiful song of loving friendship that is set on a strange and dreamy sea shore.

It was recorded for the first time in 1983 for the Maddy Prior and the Answers’ album Going for Glory and as a single with the B-side Western Movies. Maddy is accompanied by Ann Lennox singing backing vocals and playing flute and by Steve King playing accordion.

A version from the Backroom Boys & Girls’ (with Rick Kemp) was on their 1990 album Brief Encounters and on the B-side of the single Say What You Say. The next version was released on Maddy Prior’s solo album from 1993, Year, and later included in the Park Records sampler A Stroll Through the Park. Further versions can be found on the Maddy Prior 1995 compilation Memento and on Rick Kemp’s 1996 solo album Escape. A live recording from Maddy Prior’s Arthur the King tour at Castle Hall, Liverpool on 8 May 2003 was included in her anthology Collections: A Very Best of 1995 to 2005.

Piick Kemp also sang Deep in the Darkest Night in 2018 on his Fellside album Perfect Blue.

Lyrics

Maddy Prior sings Deep in the Darkest Night

Deep in the darkest night
Under a midnight blue
Standing alone with the sea and the moon
You said that you’d come back soon
Deep in the darkest night

Deep in a memory
A fugitive on the run
Looking for somewhere to make a bed
Somewhere to lie a restless head
Deep in a memory

Chorus:
I’ll be your harbour when there’s a storm
I’ll be your sunshine I’ll keep you warm
I’ll be your shelter in the rain and snow
Remember wherever you go
Deep in the darkest night

Dans un noir de nuit
Je n’avais rien dit
Souvenir d’un ête chaud
Souvenir de soleil et d’eau
Dans un noir de nuit

Deep in your heart you know
You’re running against the wind
Taking your loneliness in your case
The same old sadness from place to place
Deep in your heart you know

Chorus

Dans un noir de nuit
Dans un noir de nuit
Deep in the darkest night
