Sum Waves / The Devil’s Dream
[trad.]
Steeleye Span recorded these tunes for their album All Around My Hat. They were also one of the alternative B-sides of their single Hard Times of Old England. A live recording from Canberra Theatre in 1975 was released in 2001 on the CD Gone to Australia. Maddy Prior commented in the latter album’s liner notes:
Peter tells me this tune was written with Scotland in mind. It was based on the use of drones that are so much a part of music played on the pipes. The intention was to create an atmosphere rhather than a strong melodic line. The tune that follows [in the Canberra Theatre recording] is a traditional tune called The Devil’s Dream.
