Songs From North-East Scotland
Shona Donaldson sang Broadlands Lan’ in 2010 on her Deveron Projects album Short Nichts and Lang Kisses. She noted:
A song from Isaac and Alexander Troup from Ythanside who contributed a number of songs to The Greig-Duncan Collection. Broadlands is a farm beside Drumdelgie and although not as well known as its famous neighbour, is just as worthy of a song.
Lyrics
Shona Donaldson sings Broadlands Lan’
I am a young man, who delights in the hunt,
Among the high mountains or far in the sooth,
And there I met w i’ a bonny young lass
And gin I hid her in Broadlands hoose.
Broadlands hoose, in Broadlands hoose,
And gin I hid her in Broadlands hoose.
Her face it is fair without any paint,
Her weel-made foot and her lily white han’
And when I look tae her my hairt it’s in pain
And gin I hid her in Broadlands Lan’
Broadlands Lan’, in Broadlands Lan’,
And gin I hid her in Broadlands Lan’.
But in a short time her apron grew short.
Her petticoats they didna meet wi’ a span
But oh the fine fellow he gave her his han’
Saying, “I’ll mak you the lady o’ Broadlands Lan’
Broadlands Lan’, o’ Broadlands Lan’,
I’ll mak you the lady o’ Broadlands Lan’.”
Her faither and mither they gave her advice
Tae stay at hame in the lands o’ the sooth
But all their persuasion had proved all in vain
“He’s nae the Laird o’ Broadlands hoose.
Broadlands hoose, o’ Broadlands hoose,
He’s nae the Laird o’ Broadlands hoose.”
The gentlemen they stood all in a course
Tae see how the lady wid handle her horse
The laird gaed a bow wi’ his hat in his han’
Saying, “Yer welcome my dear, tae Broadlands Lan’,
Broadlands Lan’, o Broadlands Lan’,
Yer welcome my dear, tae Broadlands Lan’.”
“Yer face it is fair without any paint,
Yer weel-made foot and yer lily white han’
And when I look tae ye my hairt it’s in pain
But yer noo the Lady o’ Broadlands Lan’,
Broadlands Lan’, o’ Broadlands Lan’,
Yer noo the Lady o Broadlands Lan’.”
