Sandy Denny: Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor (Mooncrest MOON 54)

Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor / This Train
Sandy Denny

Mooncrest MOON 54 (single, UK, 1978)

[ Roud 13930 ; Ballad Index Handy190 ; trad. arr. A. Johnson]

Sandy Denny sang Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor in a session with the Johnny Silvo group on 22 March 1967. The recording has a similar sound to This Train and so tends to the record company’s idea of what a folk song should sound like, as opposed to a folk club’s idea. It was originally released in 1967 on Sandy and Johnny and was reissued in 1977 on the German Nova compilation LP Sandy Denny, in 1978 on the Mooncrest album The Original Sandy Denny and as a single, and in 2005 on her Castle Music anthology Where the Time Goes.

An alternative version from the same recording session was included in 1970 on the Saga compilation LP Sandy Denny and—for the first time on CD—in 2005 on Where the Time Goes, together with the first version.

Sandy sang Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor live with the Johnny Silvo Four in June 1967 for the BBC World Service programme “The Johnny Silvo Four”, broadcast in early January 1968. This recording was included in 2007 on her 3CD+DVD set Live at the BBC.

Johnny Silvo and Diz Dizley sang Pallet on the Floor on their 1999 Fellside album Blues in the Backyard.

Lyrics

Sandy Denny sings Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor

Make me a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet on your floor
Make it soft, make it low, so your woman don’t know
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Come all you good time friends of mine,
Come all you good time friends of mine.
When I had ten dollars, you treated me so fine
Where were you when I only had a dime.

Come on and make me a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet on your floor
Make it soft, make it low, so your woman don’t know
Make me a pallet on your floor.

I’ll be more than satisfied,
If I could catch one train to ride
But if I reach Atlanta with no place to go,
Please make me a pallet on your floor

Make me a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet on your floor
Make it soft, make it low, so your woman don’t know
Make me a pallet on your floor.

I’m gonna make you a red-hot meal
Gonna make you a red-hot meal
To show you I appreciate all that you have done
When you make me a pallet on your floor.

Come on and make me a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet on your floor
Make it soft, make it low, so your woman don’t know
Make me a pallet on your floor.
