Eleazar Tillett of Wanchese, North Carolina, sang The Jolly Thresher in 1951 to Anne and Frank Warner. This was printed in the Warner’s 1984 book Traditional American Folk Songs From the Anne & Frank Warner Collection, and was included in 2000 on the Appleseed Recordings anthology Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still (The Warner Collection Volume I). The album’s booklet noted:

Speaking as it does of “hedging and ditching”, this is clearly an English song. It is sung by the Copper family in Sussex, England, as The Honest Labourer and Kennedy says that thresher is pronounced “thrasher” in England, as it is by Eleazar.

Sarah Makem sang The Jolly Thresher at home in Keady, Co Armagh, in 1955 to Diane Hamilton. This recording was included in 2011 on her Musical Traditions anthology As I Roved Out. Rod Stradling noted in the accompanying booklet:

This is very much an English song—more than half of Roud’s 141 versions are English—and only 4 Irish singers are noted: John Millan, Nicholas Hughes, Catherine Devlin, and Sarah all from the North, and ‘Pops’ Johnny Connors, from Co Wexford. It is sung here to a variant of The Enniskillen Dragoon. In the conjunction of words and tune, it illustrates one salient fact about Sarah Makem’s repertoire and, indeed, about the folk singing of North-East Ulster. In this part of Ireland, the tradition is inextricably mixed. Three streams of traditional music and verse converge—the native Irish, the English and the Scots, and this convergence is most marked in small market towns like Keady, whose rural character was gradually modified during the nineteenth century by the introduction of manufacturing industry.

Another Sarah Makem recording made by Bill Leader at her home in 1967 was released a year later on her Topic album Ulster Ballad Singer, and a third version recorded by Paul Carter and Sean O’Boyle in 1967 too was included in 2012 on her Topic CD The Heart Is True (The Voice of the People Series Volume 24).

Harry Holman sang The Nobleman and the Thresherman on 18 May 1960 at The Cherry Tree, Copthorne, Sussex. This recording made by Frank Purslow and Ken Stubbs was printed in 1970 in Stubb’s E.F.D.S book of English folk songs from the Home Counties, The Life of a Man. It was included as There Was a Poor Thresherman with the first line and the second and fifth verse missing—and thus not mentioning the nobleman— in 1998 on the Topic anthology There Is a Man Upon the Farm (The Voice of the People Series Volume 20). This very performance was recorded by Brian Matthews too, but in better sound quality and with the first line intact; it was released with the title The Nobleman and the Thresher on the 2001 Musical Traditions anthology of songs from country pubs, Just Another Saturday Night: Sussex 1960. Rod Stradling noted in the booklet:

Mawkish sentimentality and forelock-tugging always seem to be popular, so it’s unsurprising that there are 101 Roud entries for this song, or that 13 of these are sound recordings—and thus quite recent. It has been found all over these islands, and seems very popular in the USA as well. Although there are 13 entries for Sussex, there are actually only three traditional sources—the others being Henry Hills (Lodsworth), and the Copper family. CD recordings from the latter, Harry, Eleazar Tillett (N Carolina) and Frank Hinchliffe (MTCD311-2) are still available.

Ron Copper sang Honest Labourer in a 1963 recording by Peter Kennedy on the EFDSS LP Traditional Songs From Rottingdean, which was reissued in 2001 on the Topic CD of early recordings of the Copper Family, Come Write Me Down; and Bob Copper recorded it in May 1995 for the CD Coppersongs 2: The Living Tradition of the Copper Family.

Bob Copper also sang The Honest Labourer at a concert he did with Bob Lewis at Nellie’s Folk Club, The Rose and Crown Hotel, Tonbridge, Kent, on 17 October 1999. This concert was released in 2017 on their Musical Traditions CD The Two Bobs’ Worth.

Frank Hinchliffe sang this song as The Nobleman and the Thresherman in a recording made by Mike Yates in 1976 that was released on his 1977 Topic album of traditional songs from South Yorkshire, In Sheffield Park. It was also included in 2001 on the Musical Traditions anthology of Mike Yates recordings, Up in the North and Down in the South. Mike Yates noted in the latter’s booklet:

Robert Burns contributed a version of this song to The Scots Musical Museum, and it was an old song then in 1792, earlier blackletter broadside versions being in the Roxburghe and Euing collections. It has been noted in many parts of the country and has been frequently published. Frank’s tune is a particularly good one; he told me that it was a local favourite, once known to most of the older people in the area.

However, despite its popularity, I do not feel that the song presents an accurate account of rural life during the 17th–19th centuries (for this, see E.P. Thompson’s The Making of the English Working Class). Rather, the song seeks to present an idealised picture, one where the labourer knows his place, and where honest toil gains its reward. In other words, the song seeks to preserve the status quo and, like the church, offers solace to those who are prepared to accept things just as they are.

Ian Woods and Charley Yarwood sang The Nobleman and the Thresherman in 1984 on their Traditional Sound album Hooks & Nets. This track was included in 2002 on the Fellside anthology of the calendar in traditional song, Seasons, Ceremonies & Rituals. Charley Yarwood noted:

There are many versions of this song, some dating back well over two hundred years. I learnt this one from a recording of Frank Hinchcliffe of South Yorkshire.

Peter Bellamy sang The Honest Labourer in 1985 on his EFDSS album Second Wind. He noted:

The folksongs of the genuinely disadvantaged tell us a great deal about their aspirations; Big Bill Broonzy sang of the Big Black Cadillac he probably never got to own; how many Gypsy-girl fortune-tellers snared their rich young lords? Anyway, I doubt it was an everyday occurrence for an Honest Labourer to luck into ‘fifty acres of good land’ simply by being honest, working hard and for saying nice things about his wife. But who could blame them for putting their wishful fantasies into song? My version is an amalgam of two, one from the beloved Copper Family of Sussex, the other from Yorkshire’s splendid Frank Hinchliffe.

Will Noble sang The Nobleman and the Thresherman on his 1992 Veteran Tapes cassette of South West Yorkshire songs, In That Beautiful Dale.

(Dr) Faustus sang Thresherman, “from the singing of Harry Holman of Copthorne in Sussex”, in 2003 on their Fellside CD The First Cut. A live version recorded at The Lights, Andover, Hampshire, in March 2015 was included in 2017 on their EP Slaves. Paul Sartin also sang it with Belshazzar’s Feast at The Pound in Corsham, Wiltshire, in September 2013. This recording was included in 2014 on their live album The Whiting’s on the Wall.

Paul Davenport sang The Thresherman in 2011 on his and Liz Davenport’s Hallamshire Traditions album Spring Tide Rising. They noted:

This tale of the Squire’s largess is perhaps not as far fetched as we might think. When his farm went bust, Paul’s grandfather was saved from poverty, largely because of his character, (he had won the Military Medal on the Somme in 1916) by Major Hall of Settrington Hall, who gave him a tied cottage and the job of under-gardener. Just such an event may have informed this song. This version is from Arthur Laycock of Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire (see Grange Moor).

The Dollymopps sang The Honest Thresherman on their 2011 album of traditional songs from the Isle of Wight collected by W.H. Long, Long Songs. They noted:

Superficially, this is a Victorian melodrama about knowing your place. However, scratch the surface and it may yet have much to say about contentment in the modern world. The beautiful tune is from the singing of Harry Holman, recorded in Sussex in 1960.

Matt Quinn sang The Nobleman and the Thresherman on his 2012 CD Broom Abundance. He noted:

The Nobleman and the Thresherman has been found in broadsides since about 1865 and this version comes from the singing of Yorkshire farmer Frank Hinchliffe.

Andy Turner sang Nobleman and Thresherman as the 7 July 2013 entry of his project A Folk Song a Week. His version is based on the four verses Clarke Lonkhurst sang to Cecil Sharp at Hamstreet in Kent, in September 1908, augmented by verses from the Copper family version.

Banter sang The Labourer in 2021 on their Mrs Casey album Three. They noted:

From the repertoire of The Copper Family of Rottingdean, East Sussex, but also widely known as The Nobleman and the Thresher or The Thresherman. Nina [Zella] loved the words but a more bouncy tune came to mind for her. She toyed with the idea of writing a verse saying “Thanks, but no thanks, I don’t need your charity, I’m doing OK on my own,some of us work for a living”.

Vic Shepherd and John Bowden sang The Nobleman and the Thresher in 2022 on their Hallamshire Traditions album Revel in the Stories. They noted:

This song is widely known throughout England, and is found in the repertoires of, among others, the Copper family of Sussex, who call it The Honest Labourer, and Frank Hinchliffe of Lodge Moor. Sheffield; it has also been found in North America, being sung for instance by Eleazar Tillett of North Carolina, one of Frank and Anne Warners informants and, rarely, in Northern Ireland, having been collected from Sarah Makem for example. We learned this over 50 years ago from the singing of Frank Hinchliffe’s cousin, George White of Stannington, Sheffield, whose version is three verses longer than Frank’s.

Rather like a number of other songs in the folk tradition, such as The Gypsy’s Wedding Day, All Jolly Fellows That Follow the Plough and The Farmer’s Boy, this song can hardly be taken as a description of an everyday occurrence, or of the real situation of rural labourers in the 19th century, as has been pointed out by several commentators; however it was very popular with traditional singers in the Sheffield area, and, as Ian Russell says in the article referred to above, George White’s final verse is rarely found, and harks back to a pre-1700 ‘black-letter sheet’, demonstrating “an example of textual stability over a period of 300 years”. It’s a great chorus song, where it is often possible to join in before the repeated refrain as it becomes obvious how the verse is going to develop!

Patakas (Joe and Will Sartin) sang Thresherman in 2023 on their WildGoose EP When You’re Ready. They noted:

Published in J H Dixon’s Ancient Poems, Ballads and Songs of the Peasantry of England, 1846; this song has been found in multiple broadsides dated from the 19th century. Though originally written in a major key, several minor variations were created such as the arrangement of Harry Holman from Copthorne, Sussex, which served as the inspiration of both the Dr Faustus and Faustus versions which in turn is what we used as a basis for our arrangement.
